Bomb wounds eight in downtown Trang

TRANG: At least eight people were injured after a bomb exploded at a walking street market in downtown Trang city today.

The blast occurred while vendors were setting up their stalls along Ruenrom Road, on the same street as the Trang Provincial Justice Office, less than a block away from City Hall.

Police have cordoned off the area, and are reportedly inspecting a suspicious bag that was found near the blast site.

Two of the injured were rushed to the Wattana Paet hospital, and six others were sent to Trang Hospital. There were no reports of deaths as a result of the blast at press time.

While bombings occur regularly in Thailand’s southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, it is unusual for the insurgency to target areas outside of the ‘Deep South’.

Earlier this morning, Phuket Explosive Ordinance Disposal units were called into downtown Patong, after locals reported two suspicious packages found there (story here).
