Phuket tsunami warning buoys deployed

PHUKET: The operation to install tsunami direct-detection buoys in the Andaman Sea has concluded and been hailed a success.

The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (Seafdec) ship used to deploy the buoys returned to port in Phuket on Thursday.

“The operation went smoothly. The first buoy was installed 250 kilometers west of Phuket, while the second was installed 150km from Phang Nga.

“The two of them are about 250km apart,” said Chayasarn Tonanon of the National Disaster Warning Center (NDWC), on board to oversee the operation.

NDWC Director Somsak Khaosuwan told the Gazette, “The first tsunami buoy was installed on December 12. The second installation was finished yesterday.

“Now we need to ensure the data from buoys is sent continuously to our center. We will train officers extensively on how to interpret the data.

“Then we will create software to make it easier to read,” he said.

The NDWC will then set up a website where real-time data will be posted for the public to see, Mr Somsak added.
