Phuket People: Renaissance man

PHUKET: Goetz Bauer joined Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa as general manager in April this year. The German national, who also speaks English, Italian and French, brings an energetic and youthful leadership style to Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa. Goetz said his new role presents several challenges and he looks forward to taking them on.

“The challenge is to learn how to manage a resort, I love it but I am not used to it. The management of the extremes between the seasonality, the strong impact of the elements as well as the nature are challenging and fascinating at the same time.”

“With this role a dream came true for me I love this beautiful property and I am proud to lead this great team. My goals match with my motto: ‘the sky is the limit’ and that is the attitude I have with this property and team.” he said.

“I believe in the core value of Mr Marriott: ‘If you take good care of your associates, they will take good care about your guests’,” he added.

Mr Bauer is a family man who spends all his free time with his family, especially at the moment, as his second daughter was just born few weeks ago.

When asking about the places he likes to go, Mr Bauer told the Phuket Gazette that he likes the beach and beach clubs.

“I love the beach and its beach clubs, but Phuket also has great restaurants to offer,” he said.

“The beach, the sea, the nature and the great Thai food. The clean air is great and the traffic is much better compared to Bangkok,” he added.

Mr Bauer is continuing to build on his 19 year career in the hospitality and management industry in the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia. This has included senior operational and management positions with the Hilton International, Marriott, Courtyard by Marriott and Renaissance brands. Most recently Goetz was a general manager at Marriott Executive Apartments Sathorn Vista in Bangkok.

Goetz worked for six years with Hilton International and he has been a part of the Marriott International team for 13 years and counting – for four different brands of Marriott, namely International Marriott, Courtyard by Marriott, Marriott Executive Apartments and Renaissance Hotels and in six different locations – Leipzig, Berlin, Karlsruhe, Saigon, Bangkok and now, Phuket.

He started his long career in rooms operation, doing a side step into sales and marketing, before landing his first role as GM at the Marriott Executive Apartment Sathorn Vista Bangkok

“Marriott as a company is a great employer with good leaders which help develop your talents through training, as well as controlled pressure, which helps prepare you for jobs with higher responsibilities step by step,” he concluded.
