Business Buzz: Consistency is the key

PHUKET: One of the most frequent comments I receive from unsuccessful people is that they believe social media does not work and is all hype and myth.

It is interesting that so many say this, especially when successful users swear that without social media their business would be dead.

So to help the doubters, here are points that have probably been missed.

The first element that has to be decided with any social media campaign is what you are trying to achieve. This is a very important but often overlooked first step. You would not get in a car to start a journey and just drive before actually working out where you are going, and a social media campaign is the same.

The most common choices are building brand awareness, generating leads and finding new customers.

So, once you have chosen your purpose and planned an effective strategy, the key becomes consistency.

The part that many people fail to appreciate is that social media, while part of it has immediate brand awareness impact, generally requires that success be built up from repeated exposure. In this way, it is very similar to the old search engine optimization.

People want to build rapport and trust with a brand. In marketing, it was recognized that a company needed seven contacts with a potential client before these would convert into a sale, but now, with instantaneous social media, the belief is that it is closer to 13 contacts.

We need to build awareness, create a following and stay connected. This takes time and a strong message.

Put simply, it requires constant and consistent action.
